"Look at it not for what it is, but for what else it is."
Minor White.
"Tim Rudman's Lith Printing Workshop will guide you in discovering how to bring the 'what else it is' out of your negatives via a special kind of technical craftsmanship through which your own artistry can find its personal highest expression. Just to be able to view Tim's lith portfolios in person is an inspiring experience of the 'what else it is'. His well-organized workshop is packed full of information and hands-on experience as he personally guides each individual participant to an exciting new dimension of photographic communication."

About my workshops
I began teaching practical workshops by request around 1995 and have found them both enjoyable and rewarding. Successful workshops don't just happen. They require a combination of planning, experience, knowledge and a desire to share it - and the ability to teach. Being a good photographer or printer does not automatically make a good teacher.
The ethic behind all my books has been the sharing and dissemination of knowledge and skills. The scientific community (medicine) from which I came fostered this principle, rather than the secretive attitudes sometimes found elsewhere. My long involvement with post graduate education as a medical trainer and educator provided me with teaching skills that are invaluable in the workshop environment.
The emphasis in my workshops is on informality, co-operation and fun. Like children (aren't we all at heart?) we learn best when playing and so the learning value of 'playtime' is emphasised, along with risk-taking (what happens if ...?), being prepared to make mistakes ('There is rich learning in disaster'), and group sharing. There is a high return rate amongst my 'students' and it is always fun to renew these friendships year on year.
I will try to accommodate workshop requests whenever possible.
Workshops offered
I do not run a workshop programme, but requests to give workshops are accommodated where time and circumastances permit, so course availability changes accordingly. The following workshops are still available in 2008:
Workshops with Tim Rudman at The Photographer’s Formulary, Montana.
Oct 5th - 10th, 2008
Lith Printing and Toning – from scratch
This class is suitable for both newcomers to the process and established Lith printers, although some basic darkroom experience is required. Board and lodging on site are included.
This is an opportunity to learn the delicate and beautiful art of Lith printing. This process has nothing to do with Lith negatives, line work or other graphics applications. Instead, it is a very creative and expressive form of interpretative printing using ‘normal’ negatives and black & white papers and may significantly expand your artistic and creative capabilities.
Lith Prints are typically very warm-toned prints with a unique combination of wonderfully subtle low contrast properties in the highlights, warm mid-tones, and high contrast colder tones in the shadows. However, it is an extremely flexible process and many variations may be wrought. Lith prints tone exceptionally well in selenium and gold toners.
Not all papers will Lith print well and there have been many changes in the last few years, with some papers exiting the market and new ones entering. Current and new materials will be explored - along with ways of making others do better!
Participants will learn the underlying principles of making a Lith print and then, step by step, how to take control of the process in order to predict outcome and explore its creative potential.
Single and multiple toning techniques will be practised together with some more advanced procedures, such as '2-bath' lith printing techniques, bleach-back and bleach and redevelopment using both 'normal' and Lith developers ('2nd pass Lith’).
By the end of the week you may be surprised, both by how well you have mastered the techniques, and by how differently you view your images.
The emphasis of these workshops will be on informality, co-operation and fun, and stressing the learning value of ‘playtime’, safe individual risk-taking and group sharing.
The darkrooms at ‘The Formulary’ are always open and after the day’s teaching is over there will be as much time as you want for ‘unstructured’ printing and processing through the evening and night! We will pick up on any learning points from this work at the start of each day.

Lith Printing – Continuing Personal Development: Alumni Groups
These 2 courses were set up at the request of Tim’s 2007 Lith printing workshop students, who wanted the opportunity to build on their new skills and take their personal development in Lith printing on to a new level with Tim’s supervision and guidance.
These courses are open to anyone who has attended one of Tim's 5 day Lith printing courses before at any time and dispenses with teaching the basics, in favour of personal supervision into whatever direction the student wishes.
The usual structured illustrated theory input sessions and plenary discussion groups during the day will be replaced with one-on-one consultation time alongside free-flowing printing, toning and bleach/redevelopment on demand throughout the course. All three processing rooms will be available at all times, so students can move between darkroom and light-room processes at will. There will be ample time each evening for plenary group discussion to share the day’s work and for portfolio reviews.
Specific teaching requests will be accommodated as far as possible, either on an individual basis or in ad hoc groups at the request of those present and a wish-list portfolio is being assembled by group email discussion, in which any prospective alumni are welcome to participate.
These alumni courses are already filling up quickly but spaces are still available.
Board and lodging on site are included and the darkrooms and light-rooms are open around the clock!
